Gemini

Google's AI assistant and model family, woven into Search, Gmail, Docs and the rest of the Google world.

Gemini is both Google's answer to ChatGPT and the model family powering AI across Google's products. It is strongly multimodal (text, images, audio, video) and comes in tiers from lightweight to frontier.

Its real distinction is distribution. Gemini shows up inside tools billions of people already use: the AI answers at the top of Google Search, the writing help in Gmail and Docs, the assistant on Android phones. Most people who use Gemini never chose it; it arrived where they already were. Google also makes NotebookLM, a separate research tool with its own following.

Why you keep hearing it

Because Google is one of the three frontier labs (with OpenAI and Anthropic), and because its releases reach ordinary users instantly through products they already have open. For businesses on Google Workspace, Gemini is often the AI that is simply already there, approved and included.

What it means for you

Two things. The AI summaries in Google Search are Gemini, and they are changing how people find brands without clicking. And if your company runs on Google Workspace, Gemini may be the path of least resistance for your team, worth comparing honestly against the assistants people would choose for themselves.
