OpenAI

The AI company behind ChatGPT, and the one that made the whole world pay attention.

OpenAI is the San Francisco AI lab that turned generative AI from a research field into a consumer phenomenon. Founded in 2015, it built the GPT series of models, and in November 2022 released ChatGPT, which reached a hundred million users faster than any product before it and effectively started the current AI era.

Beyond ChatGPT, OpenAI makes image and video generation models (DALL-E, Sora) and sells access to its models through an API that thousands of products build on. Microsoft is its biggest partner and investor, which is why OpenAI technology shows up across Copilot and other Microsoft products.

Why you keep hearing it

Because it is the most famous company in AI, its releases move the whole industry, and its dramas (leadership, lawsuits, its unusual structure as a company born from a nonprofit) are covered like celebrity news. Its main rivals at the frontier are Anthropic and Google.

What it means for you

Mostly orientation: OpenAI is the company, GPT is the model family, ChatGPT is the product you use. Many tools claiming to be "AI-powered" are OpenAI models under a different interface, which is worth knowing when you compare them.
