ChatGPT

OpenAI's chat assistant, and for most of the world, the front door to AI.

ChatGPT is the product that made AI a household topic. Released by OpenAI in late 2022, it wrapped their GPT models in a simple chat window, and within months "just ask ChatGPT" was part of everyday speech. It can write, summarise, analyse, search the web, work with images and voice, and remember things about you between conversations.

The name has drifted toward generic use, like Googling: people say "I asked ChatGPT" when they mean any AI assistant. Its actual competitors include Claude and Gemini.

Why you keep hearing it

Because it is where hundreds of millions of people, including your customers and colleagues, actually meet AI. When surveys say employees use AI secretly at work, they mostly mean ChatGPT. When your buyers ask an AI to recommend products or explain a company, there is a good chance the conversation happens here.

What it means for you

Two angles. As a user: it is a perfectly good default assistant, though it pays to try more than one and compare. As a marketer: ChatGPT is now a discovery channel. How it describes your brand when someone asks is worth checking, the same way you once checked your first page of Google results.
